Frequently Asked Questions about our harnesses and saddlery
Materials & craftsmanship
What is BioThane® and why use it for a harness?
BioThane® is a textile strap coated with PVC. As strong as leather, it is rot-proof, washable with water, and requires no greasy maintenance. It is the ideal material for intensive agricultural or forestry use, in all weather conditions.
Is BioThane® as strong as leather?
Yes, for working purposes: BioThane® offers excellent traction and abrasion resistance, without cracking, hardening or rotting when exposed to moisture and mud. Unlike leather, it is unaffected by rain or sweat and cleans off with a hose.
What is the difference between a French collar and an American collar?
The French collar is the traditional European draft collar, made of straw-stuffed wood, designed for slow, heavy work. The American collar, made of adjustable metal, fits the horse's shape more easily and can be adjusted in both height and width. We make harnesses compatible with both systems.
Why is the crupper made of urethane rather than leather?
Historically, the crupper (the part passing under the horse's croup) was stuffed leather. It is now made of urethane, with the same easy care as BioThane®: a simple rinse with water is enough. All the parts in contact with sensitive friction points therefore combine comfort for the horse and durability, with no greasing required.
Custom fitting & manufacturing
Do you make custom harnesses for draft horses?
Yes. Every harness is made to order in our workshop on the Causse Méjean, in Lozère, France, and adapted to your horse's shape and to your existing equipment (French or American collar). We advise you on the adjustments to ensure safety and freedom of movement.
Which animals and uses do you make harnesses for?
We fit draft horses (Comtois, Breton, Auxois…), ponies, donkeys and mules for farm traction, forest skidding, pleasure driving and field work. Each harness is sized according to the animal and its intended use.
How do you take measurements for a custom harness?
Remotely, thanks to our measurement sheet: you take a few simple dimensions on your animal following our guide, send them to us, and we build the matching harness. On-site measuring is also possible if you are visiting Lozère.
Do you repair or adapt existing harnesses?
Yes. We repair, adapt and convert existing harnesses, including fitting them with BioThane® parts. Send us photos of your equipment and we will provide a quote.
